(INASP) -International network for availability of scientific
publications
Most
African researchers cannot get
access to up-to-date research in their subject: university libraries
cannot afford the journals. Neither can they publish research easily
– African journals do not circulate widely. The same is true, to a
greater
or lesser extent, in other developing countries.
The
International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP)
is radically changing this picture. Over the next five years, all
researchers with internet connections
in up to 40 countries will get online access to over 6000 journals,
and abstracts from another 20,000 titles - from African Development
Review to the Veterinary Journal. Publishers have agreed country-
wide access licences at very heavily reduced rates. At the same
time, INASP is helping journals published in developing countries to go
online and providing the opportunity for a range of ‘Internet’
training to help ensure that the information available is utilised to
its fullest potential.

9a) Searchable Databases
|
1)
Wageningen
Agricultural University, Wageningen, Netherlands (site in
English) : http://www.wau.nl/welcome.hmtl.
Full explanation for browsing in English
and free/open databases. (Also a portal for staff/student
access to restricted servers - some members perhaps qualify for
these).
Library services include free bilingual helpdesk and (paying) photocopy
service or ditto email postings. Email copies of journal articles are
currently 45 Eurocents/page. Minimum charge: 3.20 Euro/order. Visa and
Mastercards are accepted online.
|
2)
Rijksuniversitiet,
Gent (State University), Ghent, Belgium : http://www.rug.ac.be, then click on
"English version" on webpage.
General Comment: Commands are not always bilingual Dutch/English on
every page on either University
site, so a pocket Dutch-English phrasebook/dictionary is a good
investment. (Dutch-speaking programmers, however, generally retain US
computerspeak. Furthermore, many Dutch
search terms come easily to English speakers : Author
= auteur; Title = Titel, etc. Online helpdesks are bilingual.

Subject: New online service from Kew
Kew Gardens has released the first stage in
a new online information resource discovery service called
ePIC, the electronic
Plant Information Centre. From the ePIC interface at http://www.kew.org/epic/ you can
now search for plant information across 4 databases held at Kew in one
action. Over the next 2 years we will be extending the features, and
adding many more databases to this system, with the intention of
ultimately including all of our major collections, bibliographies,
taxonomic and species-based datasets. The first release includes:
a) the International Plant Names Index
b) bibliographic data in the Kew Record of Taxonomic Literature
c) information about the economic uses of plants in the Survey of
Economic Plants of Arid and Semi-Arid Lands
d) our Living Collection of c30,000 plant taxa
Taxacomers are invited to try out the service, and please let us have
your comments by email to epicfeedback@kew.org.
Also Kew, is currently working to put
its Economic Botany Bibliographic Database on line as a free
resource

A
much
improved information network EARD-InfoSys+ has now been launched
at: http://www.infosysplus.org
EARD-InfoSys+ provides information on Agricultural Research (ARD)
throughout Europe though some countries contributions are patchy to say
the least. The restructured database permits to explore the ARD
landscape and offers an advanced
search for organisations, projects, experts and funding opportunities
in
ARD. Important news and events in the field of ARD are displayed in the
"news
& events" section. One of the new services of EARD-InfoSys+ is the
e-mail
ALERT news service. As a registered user you will be informed via
e-mail
on new data entries in your field of interest. You can define your
profile
of interest in the ALERT registration form.
Click here to register for e-mail alert: http://www.infosysplus.org/alert/alert_index.php?alert_start=1
You can also benefit from the alert service by publishing own
information on EARD-InfoSys+. Enter your information at
http://www.infosysplus.org/input/index.php Your information will
then automatically be sent out to all registered
users with a matching profile of interest. You can present your
expertise, promote your organisation and inform about your projects and
activities. This
tool permits registered users to keep a good overview of ongoing
projects, funding possibilities and important workshops and
conferences. Obviously the
more people use this service, the better it gets. It would therefore be
very
kind of you to forward this information to interested colleagues. This
is
being run by Marc Bernard, Manager of EARD-InfoSys+ at ZADI
