TROPICAL AGRICULTURIST FOOD CROPS AND DROUGHTAuthor: John AshleyMacmillan and CTA133pp, ISBN 0-333-59831-8 |
Food Crops and Drought looks at the ways in which
the productivity of food crops in the semi arid tropics may be increased,
and the yields safegarded, by both genetic and agronomic means. It explains
the characteristics of drought tolerant crops, and genetic improvements
to those crops to enable moderate yields to be achieved under dryland
conditions. It also explores farming practices which can contribute to
increased yields and enhance such genetic adaptation. There are also chapters
on the effect of drought on crops, drought tolerance in food crops such
as cereals and legumes, genetic improvements, and improving water resources
and their use. Climatic change and human population pressure on food resources have necessitated changes in farming methods in dryland areas. The author uses examples of traditional and innovative cropping practices along with scientific research strategies and priorities for agricultural scientists and advisers to suggest ways of increasing productivity for dryland farmers, and future priorities for research. |

THE YAKFirst Edition
by Cai Li and Gerald Wiener
|
The Yak Poephagus grunniens or Bos grunniens
is one of the world's most remarkable domestic animals, a herbivore living
on the 'roof of the world', as the Qinghai-Tibet plateau is often referred
to. The plateau itself extends of 2.5 million sq. km (about 1 million sq.
miles). From the central 'core' of the yak's distribution, the animal has
also spread to adjacent territories. These areas are, to a large extent,
above the tree line and there is virtually no cropping. There is no absolutely
frostier period during any part of the year. Some 14 million yak thus live
and provide food, transport, shelter and fuel where few other animals will
survive. Overall the territory is marked by severe climate at high elevations
and with grazing resources restricted by very short growing seasons, and
in some of the alpine regions it is also marked by treacherous terrain.
It is quite possible that without the existence of the yak, capable of living
in such harsh conditions, human civilization might well not have reached
and flourished in these remote areas.
This book attempts to trace the development of this remarkable animal and to describe its characteristics and performance, and its products. There will also be a discussion of some of the investigations which have been undertaken on the yak - work which may lead to improvements in the performance of the yak and to a widening of the opportunities for its distribution and use. |
THE YAK2nd Edition 2003Revised and enlarged by Gerald Wiener, Han Jianlin and Long Ruijun FAO 2003 +460pp Apart from access to hard copies from FAO in Bangkok aphca@fao.org) the book is also available on the internet at http://www.fao.org/DOCREP/006/AD347E/ad347e00.htm#Contents Not in Tropical Agriculturalist series |
On the vast rangelands of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and in adjacent regions, livestock is the mainstay of life for the largely nomadic people and the yak is the single most important animal. It provides for most of the essentials of life including milk and meat, hair and down for clothing and tents, hides for various uses, transport, and dung for fuel in the largely tree-less regions. The total population of yak (Poephagus grunniens, a sub-genus of cattle) numbers around 14 million of which about 13 million are on the Plateau. The environment is harsh at high elevation. The 16 chapters of this revised and enlarged edition deal comprehensively with the origins and domestication of yak, breeds, breeding (including hybridisation), the important matter of adaptation of the yak to the environment, reproduction, production characteristics with a separate chapter on the performance of hybrids of yak with cattle, management of yak, diseases, and products from the yak. A chapter deals, in three parts, firstly with yak production in the six main yak-rearing provinces of China, secondly with yak in six other countries and areas of Asia with a tradition of yak keeping and thirdly with yak in relatively new, non-traditional environments, most notably North America. Other chapters are concerned with the Social and Cultural context of yak production (since any proposals for change need to be considered in that context), the Alpine Rangeland ecosystem and its management, a scientific basis of yak nutrition, consideration of molecular and cytogenetic advances in yak research, and a concluding chapter looking at problems and prospects. There is an extensive bibliography and an index. " |
